Remote work, once a marginal arrangement reserved for freelancers and a handful of technology firms, became a mainstream practice for millions of office workers within the space of a few years. Proponents point to clear benefits: employees save time and money on commuting, report greater flexibility over their schedules, and in many surveys describe higher job satisfaction. Employers, for their part, have found that productivity does not necessarily suffer when staff work from home, and some have reduced office space to cut costs.

Critics counter that something is lost when teams rarely meet in person: spontaneous collaboration, mentorship for junior staff, and a shared sense of company culture are all harder to sustain remotely. Several large employers have since asked staff to return to the office for at least part of the week, arguing that hybrid arrangements offer the best balance.
